This is in memory of my uncle, Gerald Billingsley, who served in the Royal Canadian Black Watch from 1940 to 1945. He was first stationed in Italy, then sent to the Netherlands and took part in the liberation of the town of Apeldoorn.

Gunner Norman Franklin Lockeyer is my Uncle Norman, my mother’s brother. He was killed before I was born, and I’ll be 80 on October 28, 2023. I’ll be there with my two daughters and my granddaughter. Norman is buried in France.
Harvey Irwin was killed in action during the Second World War when his plane was shot down.
David Irwin (Dave) joined the Royal Canadian Ordnance Corps in Barriefield, Ontario, in 1943. He attained the rank of Captain before retiring at the end of the Second World War.
Private David Byers was a member of the 2nd Battalion, Princess Patricia’s Canadian Light Infantry. He was killed by a suicide bomber while on patrol in Afghanistan on September 18, 2006. I’m participating with my daughter, sister and mother, who all know the Byers family. Three of us are long-time participants.
My father, William Elroy Pettie, served in the army from October 23, 1934 to July 15, 1964. He fought in Italy and was part of the UN peacekeeping force in Egypt. He retired to Vimy, Kingston, where he lived until his death in 1992.
Corporal Vijayalayan Mathiyalaghan (Vijay) joined the Canadian Armed Forces in 2011 and served with 2 Combat Engineer Regiment. He notably served in Ukraine in 2018 as part of Operation Unifier, where he used his expertise in explosive ordnance disposal to train local forces in mine clearance.
