Lieutenant (N) J. Alexander Stewart

Lt(N) Alex Stewart joined the RCN in August 2006 and attended Royal Military College of Canada (the third generation to go to RMC). He graduated in May 2010 and travelled to Esquimalt, B.C., to continue his naval officer training. On completion, he joined the Pacific Fleet and served primarily in His Majesty’s Canadian Ships OTTAWA and VANCOUVER. He became Ship’s Diver qualified and completed a director-level qualification in Information Management. He participated in counter-drug operations off the west coast of South America, and following one such deployment, he was awarded the Commander RCN’s Commendation for his actions. During an appointment as a Squadron Commander at RMC Kingston, he decided to change career directions and applied for the Military Legal Training Plan. He was successful and was to enter into First Year Law at the Ottawa University in September 2021. Tragically he was diagnosed in August 2021 with esophageal cancer. Over the following two and half years, as much as his treatment would permit, he attended law school and was a doting father of two young girls and a loving husband (his wife was also an RMC graduate). He fought extremely hard but on 28 April 2024, cancer won. He came from a military family with a long background in the service of Canada. From a great-great-great grandfather to his father, each generation has served in the Canadian Armed Forces. He was also a gifted athlete who played goalie at a Junior Hockey level and was a member of several teams that represented the Pacific at CAF Regional Championships.
