Lt Maurice Jaques joined the Canadian Expeditionary Force (C.E.F.) in 1915. He returned to France in 1916 with the 13th Battalion C.E.F., also known as The Royal Highlanders of Canada. On September 3rd, 1916, he led a small advance party on a reconnoitering mission of a German trench located at the Mouquet Farm in La Somme. Part of the trench was captured, but Lt Jaques was killed. He was 19 years old. His body was never found, and his name is on the Vimy memorial. That day, the 13th Battalion suffered 322 casualties, a third of its strength. Lest we forget. N’oublions jamais.
