Canadian Ranger Richard Newell (center) is presented with the Canadian Forces Decoration fifth clasp by Lieutenant-General Micheal Wright, Commander Canadian Army (left), and Chief Warrant Officer Christopher Robin, the Army Sergeant Major (right).

A few months ago, Canadian Ranger Richard Newell, a member of the 1st Canadian Ranger Patrol Group (1 CRPG) based in Carcross, Yukon, received a fifth clasp (CD5) for his Canadian Forces’ Decoration (CD), recognizing 62 years of service. It’s a rare honour, and this is only the fifth time a CD5 has been given out.

Ranger Newell, who is 85, served in the Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) from 1957 to 1986. After retiring, he relocated to Yukon, where he became active in Air Cadets before joining 1 CRPG.

Ranger Newell is the first recipient in active CAF service to receive a CD5, and his dedication and leadership are inspiring!

The Canadian Rangers are a part of the CAF Reserve Force, working in remote, isolated and coastal regions of Canada. They are often involved in Canada Army Run weekend, and in 2022, we honoured their 75th anniversary with “Ranger red” race shirts and hats and a special Canadian Rangers-themed coin for the 5K + 10K Challenge.
