Corporal Vijayalayan Mathiyalaghan (“Vijay”)
My beloved brother, Corporal Vijayalayan Mathiyalaghan, known to all as “Vijay,” enlisted in the Canadian Armed Forces in 2011 and proudly served with the 2nd Combat Engineer Regiment.
In 2018, he deployed to Ukraine as part of Operation UNIFIER, where he used his expertise in Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) to train Ukrainian forces in mine detection and clearance. Shortly after his deployment, he earned his Canadian military parachutist qualification, reflecting his dedication to excellence and service.
Tragically, Vijay lost his life in a motorcycle accident in 2022. He was deeply respected by his fellow soldiers and the Ottawa community, remembered for his kindness, selflessness, humility, and unwavering commitment to others.
Vijay embodied the true spirit of service. His love for Canada and his devotion to protecting the country he proudly called home knew no bounds. His legacy continues to inspire all who had the privilege of knowing him.
As we reflect on his life and sacrifice, we honor Vijay and all the brave men and women who have served and continue to serve our nation.
