I will be participating in my first half marathon at the Army Run in Ottawa, Ontario. I selected the Army Run in honour of my late grandfather, James “Scottie” Millar, who served as a Lieutenant Colonel in The Royal Canadian Air Force for over 30 years.

My grandfather and I both had a love for fitness. Since I was young, he showed me the importance of a healthy lifestyle in many ways. Whether it was our mutual enjoyment of soccer and golf, watching shopping channels for the newest fitness gear, or his wise words that still guide me today, one lesson stands out – moderation is key. My grandpa remains a significant influence on the woman I am today.

Spoken of fondly to this day by past colleagues;

“A good leader builds a strong team that bonds for a lifetime – Scottie did that at MPEU – and we are all still very grateful.”

His leadership transcended the ordinary, creating an environment where camaraderie and mutual respect flourished. His approach wasn’t just about achieving targets but about nurturing relationships that would stand the test of time. Instilling a sense of purpose and belonging, ensuring that every team member felt valued and heard. Years later, the bonds formed under his guidance remain unbreakable, a testament to his remarkable ability to inspire and unite. His legacy lives on in the countless stories shared over coffee, the reunions filled with laughter, and the unwavering support that colleagues continue to offer one another.

My grandfather was diagnosed with Parkinson’s Disease in his later years, and one of the first initiatives that he wanted to be a part of within his newfound community was participating in a fundraising walk. Another valuable lesson he instilled in me is to embrace opportunities whenever possible. In essence, if you can do it, go for it.

Therefore, in tribute to my grandfather, I am going for it.
