My grandfather, Bill Schwarz, came to Canada from Germany in 1928 and was naturalized in 1934. He served in the German army at the end of WW1. In May 1940, he enlisted in the Royal Canadian Signals Corps, first as a lineman and then qualified as a carpenter. Even though he had a Certificate of Exemption (R.147197 Vancouver), the evacuation at Dunkirk spurred him on. GSO II Intelligence Security had used his abilities at times and tried often to bring him into the Canadian Intelligence Corps, and was finally successful in May 1945. He was employed as an Intelligence Officer at PW Camp 33 in Petawawa, Ontario, while holding an acting WO 1 rank, where he interrogated PWs and led the denazification education program in the camp. Later, he would escort the PWs to England for repatriation, where he accepted the opportunity to work for two years as a CO II intelligence officer for the Control Commission Germany.
