Roger enlisted in the RCAF on the 27th of July 1942, following in the footsteps of his older brother Ray, who joined the army a year earlier. After training, Roger was shipped off to England to undergo further training. He was promoted to Sgt and became a Tail Gunner with 429 Bison Squadron, in Halifax bombers. On their 1st mission, the after-action comment stated, ”It would appear that Sgt Fournier’s training kicked in and his quick spotting of the enemy aircraft and issuing instructions for the Pilot to take evasive action saved the day. Sgt Fournier had expended about 500 rounds from his four guns, damaging the JU88.” Sadly, on October 22nd, 1943, on just their 2nd mission, while participating in an air raid on Kassel, Germany, they were shot down over Belgium with no survivors. He had just turned 20 years old.
