Major Ernest “Ernie” Romans joined the Royal Canadian Air Force in 1986 as an Air Combat Systems Officer, flying on the CP-140 Aurora. He commanded crews that successfully located and ceased illegal fishing operations in the Pacific, stopped the shipment of drugs in the Caribbean and was deployed to the Middle East. In non-flying positions, he brought in new modelling and simulation capabilities while at the Joint Warfare Centre in Ottawa and provided expertise as part of the unmanned aerial vehicle project. He was posted to Europe in support of NATO and to the United States in support of NORAD. He amassed almost 5,000 flying hours in a career that spanned more than 35 years. His legacy lives on through his stories, love of life, and family and friends.
