My grandfather, Henry Bramwell (Bram) Chandler served overseas in World War II with the Canadian Army. In 1945, following training he became an Intelligence Officer in the Canadian Infantry Corps and was assigned with the First Canadian Army on 3 May and the 2nd Canadian Corps on 9 May until 19 June. He subsequently was assigned to the 1st Canadian Army Refugee Interrogation Team. Later in the year 1945, he worked to organize the Crerar Military Library in Germany and was discharged from Active duty in April 1946.
Prior to 1945, Bram Chandler joined Non-Permanent Active Militia (reserves) at age 21. In December 1941, he was accepted for Canadian army service and attended officer training in his home town of Charlottetown, PEI. He served active duty in Canada at Halifax and Trois Rivieres, Quebec. He arrived in England in March 1945, having achieved the rank of Captain, and from there was sent to northwest Europe. He continued to remain on officer reserves in the Canadian army and was released in 1967 with the rank of Major.
He received the Canadian Volunteer Service medal, the France and Germany Star, and the War Medal 1939-45.
During his civilian career he served as a professional librarian and later worked with the National Film Board until his retirement. He was married with one son and five grandchildren. He died in 1998, at the age of 92.
