Flight Sergeant Charles Ashton Keown, age 19, was the son of Charles Henry and Amy Keown, Weston, Ontario, Canada. On 5 May 1945, 4 German U-boats were on their way to Norway, where the war was not yet over. British aircraft would stop this traffic. They circled the U-boats an a U-boat opened fire at 19.30. B24 KK299, of which Charles was on, dropped a bomb close to U-534.. The U-boat shot back and B24 KK299 crashed into the sea northeast of Anholt 3 nautical miles from the U-boat. The 11 airmen perished and 9 of them were never found, including Charles.
